On January 31, The Palazzo Grande in Shelby Township became a gathering place for community members united by a shared commitment: investing in the future of Albanian-American students in Michigan. The Gjergj Kastrioti Scholarship Fund (GKSF) held its 10th annual gala, and Beso te Diaspora (Trust in Diaspora) was proud to stand alongside this remarkable organization as both a sponsor and active participant.

A Legacy of Educational Empowerment

The numbers tell a powerful story. Since its founding in 1999 by a group of Albanian-American university graduates, GKSF has awarded 230 scholarships totaling more than $645,000. For 27 years, this 501(c)(3) non-profit has maintained an unwavering focus on its mission: empowering Albanian-American youth through higher education scholarships.

With over 200,000 Albanian-Americans calling Michigan home, the need for educational support and mentorship has never been greater. GKSF doesn’t just provide financial assistance—it sends a message to young people that their community believes in them, that their dreams matter, and that higher education is within reach.

Why Believe in Diaspora Supports GKSF

At Beso te Diaspora, we understand that the strength of any community lies in its investment in the next generation. Education is one of the most powerful tools for empowerment, opportunity, and leadership development. When we support organizations like GKSF, we’re not just funding scholarships – we’re helping to shape the doctors, engineers, teachers, business leaders, and community advocates of tomorrow.

Our support for the January 31 gala went beyond financial sponsorship. Several members of our current board were present at the event, demonstrating our deep commitment to this cause. We believe in showing up, not just with resources but with our presence, our networks, and our shared vision for what the Albanian-American community can achieve.

The Ripple Effect of Scholarships

Every scholarship awarded by GKSF creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond one student’s tuition payment. It reduces the burden of student debt, allowing graduates to pursue careers based on passion rather than just financial necessity. It strengthens families who might otherwise struggle to afford higher education. It creates role models for younger siblings and cousins. And it builds a network of educated professionals who remain connected to and invested in their community.

The 230 scholarship recipients over the past 27 years represent 230 individual stories of perseverance, ambition, and achievement. Many of these graduates have remained in Michigan, bringing their skills and knowledge back to the communities that supported them. This is how communities grow stronger – through cycles of investment and return.

Looking Forward Together

As GKSF looks toward the future, their goal is clear: to do even more. With continued community support, they can increase the number of scholarships, raise award amounts to match the rising costs of education, and expand their reach to ensure no qualified Albanian-American student is held back by financial barriers.

Believe in Diaspora is committed to being part of that future. We will continue to support GKSF’s mission through sponsorships, partnerships, and active engagement. We encourage all members of the Albanian-American community and allies to consider how they might contribute to this vital work.

A Thank You to GKSF

To the founders who had the vision 27 years ago, to the volunteers who keep the organization running, to the donors who make scholarships possible, and to the students who work hard to earn these awards – thank you. You are all part of something that transcends any single event or award. You are building a legacy of educational achievement and community support that will benefit generations to come.

The evening at The Palazzo Grande was more than a fundraiser. It was a celebration of what we can accomplish when we come together with shared purpose. It was a reminder that our community’s future is bright because we invest in making it so.
