November 28 marked a momentous day in Michigan’s history and a powerful milestone for the Albanian-American community. For the first time ever in the state of Michigan, the Albanian flag was raised in front of Westland City Hall, symbolizing the city’s recognition and embrace of its growing Albanian-American population.
From Vision to Reality
What began as an idea among members of Beso te Diaspora (Trust in Diaspora) became a beautiful reality through community collaboration and civic partnership. When our members approached Westland Mayor Kevin Coleman with this vision, they found not just a receptive audience, but an enthusiastic partner committed to celebrating the diversity that makes Westland strong.
This flag raising represents more than a symbolic gesture. It is a statement of belonging, a recognition of the contributions Albanian-Americans have made and continue to make to Westland, and an affirmation that this community is seen, valued, and celebrated.
A Community Moment
The ceremony brought together community members, local leaders, and supporters who witnessed this historic occasion. Several members of the Albanian-American community delivered heartfelt speeches, sharing their journeys, their pride in their heritage, and their gratitude for the home they’ve built in Westland.
Mayor Kevin Coleman’s participation and support underscore the city’s commitment to inclusivity and its recognition that Westland’s strength lies in its diversity. His leadership in making this event possible demonstrates the kind of responsive governance that truly serves all residents.
Why Westland Matters
Westland has become home to a large and vibrant Albanian-American community. From businesses to families, from cultural organizations to everyday neighbors, Albanian-Americans are woven into the fabric of this city. This flag raising acknowledges that presence and honors the journey of those who have chosen Westland as their home.
For many in attendance, seeing the red flag with the black double-headed eagle flying proudly in front of City Hall was an emotional moment—a validation of identity, a bridge between past and present, and a promise of continued inclusion.
The Power of Taking Initiative
This achievement reminds us of an important truth: change often begins with someone having an idea and the courage to pursue it. The members of Beso te Diaspora who sparked this initiative and brought it to Mayor Coleman didn’t just dream of recognition—they actively worked to make it happen.
This is the essence of our mission at Believe in Diaspora: empowering community members to advocate for themselves, to build bridges with civic institutions, and to ensure that diaspora voices are heard and honored.
Looking Ahead
As the Albanian flag flew over Westland on November 28, it marked not an ending but a beginning. It signals a deepening relationship between the Albanian-American community and the city they call home. It opens doors for further cultural exchange, community programming, and civic engagement.
We are grateful to Mayor Coleman, to the City of Westland, and to every community member who made this day possible. This is what happens when local government and diaspora communities work together with mutual respect and shared purpose.
To all those who stood beneath the Albanian flag on that historic day: your presence there honors those who came before and inspires those who will come after.
